Palacete TiraChapéu — A place to amplify voices
Palacete TiraChapéu
A 1917 eclectic landmark on Brazil's first street, restored over six years, reopens as a destination for gastronomy, arts and community. BR/BAUEN created the strategy, verbal language and visual identity around the brand idea "a place to amplify voices". The project won the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Award 2026.
Opened in 1917 as the home of the Bahia Commercial Employees' Association, Palacete TiraChapéu is an eclectic landmark on Rua Chile, Brazil's first street. After decades of neglect, the building was restored between 2018 and 2024 and reopened as the stage for the cultural revival of Salvador's historic centre: a destination for gastronomy, arts and community.
BR/BAUEN has followed the project since the restoration began and, in 2023, took on building the brand: strategy, verbal and visual language, and everything a cultural venue of this scale requires. The result is a system that brings architecture, narrative and behaviour together, connecting past, present and future with coherence and openness.

Idea
It all started with one question: how do you create a brand worthy of a building that is already a character of the city, without getting stuck in the past? The answer was a language that amplifies the Palacete's role as a cultural catalyst, reaching beyond the façade.
The brand idea, "a place to amplify voices, for all the world to see", shaped every creative decision. The identity had to welcome plurality, encourage expression and resist nostalgic tropes. Where many heritage projects reconstruct the past, TiraChapéu activates it in the present: the tension between preserving memory and making room for freedom lives in a dynamic, symbolic system, much like the historic centre around it.
Language
Form begins with colour: the building's yellow, a visual landmark along Rua Chile, became the cornerstone of the system, and the white architectural borders inspired the framing of every application. The brand has three elements: a detailed illustration of the building, used as an institutional seal; a formal logotype; and a contemporary monogram that brings together cocoa, coffee and the hat that gives the palace its name. Typography pairs the clarity of Decimal with the lyrical expression of Gestura Headline, and a modular texture inspired by Athos Bulcão's work echoes the architecture in a living pattern.
The system was built to scale, with signature variations that hold from heritage signage to digital. The brand lives on architectural plaques, print, packaging, institutional products, digital content and souvenirs. External signage meets the heritage façades discreetly and with low impact, and interior signage uses light, restored metal profiles. The pattern works as a backdrop for spaces and pieces, so the brand is felt even where it isn't shown.
